When are applications due?
Student applications for the Professional Development category are due June 1, 2018.
Applications for the Research & Professional Development category were due March 15, 2018.
Applications for 2019 will be posted in December, 2018.
What universities are eligible?
For the Research & Professional development category, only students attending (or intending to attend) universities listed on the “University Members” page may apply. For the Professional Development category, students at any U.S. college or university may apply (in addition to the universities listed on the “University Members” page).
Are international students eligible?
Yes, if they have been admitted to a U.S. or Canadian University. However, only Canadian Universities listed on the website under “University Members” are eligible for either the Research & Professional Development category or Professional Development category.
If selected in the Professional Development category, will I receive money directly?
No. However, all of your expenses to participate in the professional development activities will be paid by the FFAR Fellow program.
Is the FFAR Fellow program open to Postdocs?
The program is only open to PhD students who have 3 or more years left in their program.
Who are the industry sponsors?
Each fellowship is supported by equal funding from the Foundation for Food and Agriculture and an industry sponsor. Applicants are encouraged to contact industry members to explore potential sponsorship. As complete applications are received, we will circulate these to industry representatives that have expressed support and interest in the fellows program. Note that sponsorship can also derive from a grower organization, commodity group, foundation, state department of agriculture, etc. The restriction is that sponsor funds cannot derive from a federal source, for example, from a USDA grant program.
What is the cost of the industry sponsorship?
A company can sponsor a student in the Professional Development category for $5,000 per year for each of the three years of the program. This is matched with an equal amount of funds from FFAR. These funds are used for the cost of the student’s professional development expenses.
For the Research & Professional Development category, the company sponsors the student for $32,500 per year for each of the three years of the program. This is matched with an equal amount of funds from FFAR for a total of $65,000/year. These funds are used for the cost of the student’s professional development expenses, and $55,000 of the amount is provided to the student’s home department to cover the student’s tuition, fees, stipend, and a 10% overhead.
